Fry, who was honored for his work with mental health and the environment, can now call himself Sir Stephen Fry. The actor has been the chairman of the charity organization Mind since 2011.

Sir Stephen Fry tells BBC that he was "surprised and delighted" when he received the letter informing him of his knighthood.

The New Year Honours are awarded by the British monarch following recommendations from Prime Minister Keir Starmer or other higher ministers. The general public can also recommend individuals for the award.

Carey Mulligan and Sarah Lancashire were awarded the lower degree of honor, the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
