Russia's president Vladimir Putin describes the conversation as constructive and mutually respectful.
He (Trump) understands that Russia has its own national interests, says Putin, who also warns Ukraine and Europe against creating "any obstacles" to peace.
The meeting in Alaska between the presidents ended after around three hours.
It is thus the longest physical meeting the two leaders have had, according to Bloomberg. It was followed by a press conference, where the Russian president spoke first. It ended without either of them answering questions from journalists. Putin spoke for just over eight minutes, while Trump kept to just over three minutes, reports NBC News.
Meet again
The American president says he will contact, among others, NATO and Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelenskyj after the meeting – and thinks it is now Zelenskyj's responsibility to build on to reach an agreement.
Now it's really up to President Zelenskyj to get it done. And I would also say that the European countries must be involved a little, but it's up to President Zelenskyj, says Trump to the TV channel Fox News.
During the press conference, Trump also says he will "probably" meet Putin again very soon. Then Putin suggests a meeting in Moscow.
Oh, it would have been interesting, Trump replies and continues:
I'll get some criticism for it, but I can see that it could happen.
The meeting took place behind closed doors. Previously, Trump warned that he would leave within a few minutes if he mistrusted the Russian leader's intentions – while the Kremlin's spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the meeting would last "at least six to seven hours".
Visiting President Putin brought with him Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and presidential adviser Yuri Ushakov as support. Host Trump was assisted by Foreign Minister Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff.
Zelenskyj not invited
Thus, the two delegations deviated from the previous agreement that Putin and Trump would have a private meeting, accompanied only by two interpreters.
The meeting, at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base, is the first physical meeting between Trump and Putin since 2019.
Zelenskyj, who was not invited to participate, has secured European support for Ukraine's stance in the conflict being crucial.
