The investigation has been ongoing for two years and has grown from covering around 30 women to involving approximately 200. However, the prosecutor has chosen to proceed with only 87 plaintiffs to avoid the case becoming too extensive.
The case is described as the largest of its kind in Norway.
When the trial began on Tuesday, the former doctor (he has since lost his medical license) admitted to three rapes and 35 cases of abuse of power.
All rapes involve being in a vulnerable position, being unable to defend oneself, says prosecutor Eli Reberg Nessimo during the trial.
The affected women are following the trial via screen in an adjacent room.
Corrected: In an earlier version, the doctor was incorrectly given a specialist title.
