"Overall, the current outbreak and the contacts that have been with the area currently do not affect the total risk of introducing foot-and-mouth disease to Sweden. But if the situation in Germany changes, so does the risk and SVA is closely monitoring the situation", says state epizootologist Karl Ståhl on the authority's website.
The outbreak among a smaller herd of water buffalo in Germany was confirmed on Friday. During the "relevant time period", no living cloven-hoofed animals have been imported to Sweden and no inseminations from cattle from the current region have taken place, according to SVA.
Sweden has not had any outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease since the 1960s, but according to SVA, the German outbreak is "a wake-up call".
