Spain's highest court denies amnesty to Catalan separatist leader Carles Puigdemont, who has been living in exile in Belgium since 2017 after an illegal independence attempt from Spain.
Puigdemont is accused of embezzlement in connection with the independence attempt.
The highest court writes in a statement that amnesty cannot be applied to the embezzlement crime Puigdemont is accused of, and the arrest warrant against him remains in place.
Earlier this year, the parliament in the Spanish capital Madrid decided to grant amnesty to Catalan separatists, which opened up for, among others, Puigdemont to return to Spain, but that does not seem to be the case.
The Spanish government has tried to get Puigdemont extradited to Spain, but without success.
