A 25-year-old man in Australia, who describes himself as a Nazi, receives a month's imprisonment for a Nazi salute outside a court, reports Australian ABC.
The man made the gesture in front of journalists and TV cameras at a court in Melbourne in October 2023. He had just avoided prison in a case where he and about 20 other neo-Nazis had attacked a group of hikers who stumbled upon them in a mountain area and filmed their neo-Nazi symbols.
At the incident outside the court, he raised his arm in salute but quickly lowered it and said:
Oh, I almost did it, but it's probably illegal now?
Australia is for whites, Heil Hitler.
The whole thing took place just days after the state of Victoria had introduced a ban. Since then, Nazi salutes have been banned throughout the country.
The 25-year-old is the first to be convicted under the law in Victoria.
The man's lawyer, Tim Smartt, says the verdict will be appealed. He does not think imprisonment is reasonable for an action without violent elements.
