The diplomatic relations between Moscow and Warsaw have historically been tense and the strains were escalated in connection with Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Poland ordered in May that the Russian consulate in Krakow be closed after the Russian intelligence service was accused of being behind a major fire in Warsaw's largest shopping center last year.
Russia's Foreign Ministry promised an "adequate response" to the closure and on Friday came the announcement that the permit for the consulate in Kaliningrad will be withdrawn from the end of August.
"This measure has been caused by unfounded and hostile actions from the Polish side through the decimation of the Russian consular presence on Polish territory", it says in a statement.
Poland's Foreign Ministry says in turn that it had expected the Russian reaction and that it in turn will give an "adequate response" to the shutdown.
Poland has previously introduced restrictions on how Russian diplomats are allowed to move on Polish territory due to what is said to be Moscow's involvement in so-called hybrid warfare.
