Fuel to both engines was cut off just seconds after the plane took off, one engine after the other with a one-second interval.

In the audio recording, one of the pilots is heard asking the other why, the other responds that he did not turn off the fuel, according to the 15-page report, which does not take a stance on whether what happened was intentional or not.

The plane then quickly lost altitude. Even though the fuel switches were turned on again and the engines were given new power, the plane did not gain enough speed in time.

"One of the pilots sent 'MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY'", it says in the report.

Crashed into residential area

Air traffic control asked what was wrong, but then saw how the plane crashed, whereupon rescue personnel were alerted.

The plane, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, was on its way from Ahmedabad in northwestern India to London.

Of the 242 people on board, all but one died. Several more people who were on the ground were killed when the plane crashed into a residential area.

The accident commission notes that they have no proposals for measures to the aircraft manufacturer Boeing or the engine manufacturer General Electric, which shows that no technical faults have been found.

The investigation continues

Fuel switches are used to start the plane's engines, turn them off or in certain emergency situations restore them. In normal cases, they should be turned on during a flight.

The investigation, in which American and British experts have participated, continues now in search of more clues.

The passenger who miraculously survived is a British citizen. He was seen walking from the wreckage – after the plane that crashed into a sea of fire – and was not seriously injured.

Previously, it was reported that a total of 279 people had died, but after the forensic examinations were completed, the death toll has been reduced to 260.
