At least eight people have died as a result of a suspected outbreak of the deadly Marburg virus in Tanzania.

"We are aware of nine cases so far, including eight people who have died. We fear further cases in the coming days as infection surveillance improves", writes WHO chief Tedros Adhanom on X.

The Marburg virus is an RNA virus belonging to the filovirus family, which causes bleeding fever (hemorrhagic fever).
