In Spain, a volunteer worker has died from severe burns and several others have been taken to hospital. So far, six people have been killed after the fires in Spain this year.

About 8,000 people have been evacuated from their homes and thousands of hectares have been consumed by the fire, reports the Spanish public service channel TVE.

The Spanish weather agency warned on Wednesday that almost the entire country was at high or extremely high risk of fire.

In Greece, the fire brigade with the help of volunteers has fought throughout the night to get the flames under control outside the city of Patras and it seems to have had an effect, according to the Greek newspaper Ehtnos.

A volunteer who Reuters spoke to says it looks like "doomsday" and authorities ordered thousands of people near Patras to evacuate on Tuesday and Wednesday.
