In Spain, a volunteer worker has died from severe burns and several others have been taken to hospital. So far, six people have been killed in the fires in Spain this year.

About 8,000 people have been evacuated from their homes and thousands of hectares have been consumed by the fire, reports the Spanish public service channel TVE.

The Spanish weather agency warned on Wednesday that almost the entire country was at high or extremely high risk of fire.

In Greece, the fire department with the help of volunteers has been fighting throughout the night to get the flames under control outside the city of Patras and it seems to have had an effect, according to the Greek newspaper Ehtnos.

Authorities ordered thousands of people near Patras to evacuate on Tuesday and Wednesday.

We continue to work continuously to support affected countries, says EU spokesperson Eva Hrncirova on Thursday.

Fighting forest fires is primarily the task of the member states, but we are here to help them and assist them, she adds.

On Thursday, the Spanish police announced that they had arrested four more people suspected of starting forest fires, reports AFP. A total of 30 people have been arrested.
