The number of women with iron deficiency more than doubled after five months of basic military training, new research shows, reports P4 Göteborg.
Women with iron deficiency increased from 25 percent to 55 percent after five months of military basic training. One reason for the increase is high physical activity, the study shows.
The iron can be used up very quickly under these conditions that exist during basic training, says Ingrid Larsson, associate professor of clinical nutrition at the University of Gothenburg and dietitian at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, to the radio.
She is a co-author of the study, which was conducted in collaboration with, among others, the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences, GIH.
According to the researchers, the defense should be aware of individuals with iron deficiency so that women's health does not deteriorate.
You get reduced performance ability, concentration ability can be affected. These parts are incredibly important when doing this training, she says.
