The rescue operation was successful. The animal has been freed, says Agnieszka Veljkovic at the World Wildlife Fund WWF in Poland.
Whales are rarely seen in the Baltic Sea because it is a relatively small area with little food for such large animals.
The minke whale was discovered about 80 meters from the coast outside the town of Miedzyzdroje and Wolin national park in northwestern Poland.
The minke whale was relatively calm. In the second attempt to remove the nets, it seemed to understand that we had come to help and almost started cooperating, says Veljkovic.
Experts will now monitor the whale and hope that it will find its way out of the Baltic Sea via the Öresund.
