Spain is promising work and residence permits for one year to up to 25,000 undocumented migrants who were directly affected by the extensive flooding in Valencia in October.
The unusual measure was approved by Spain's parliament on Tuesday, and the decision is intended to facilitate for the many migrants who were severely affected by the rainstorms and flooding in the region.
The one-year rule is being established as a consequence of the "unexpected and exceptional circumstances". Those who lost relatives in the flooding will receive five-year residence permits. However, it can be denied to those who are suspected of posing security or health problems, according to the Integration and Social Department, writes Spanish El País.
The disaster culminated on October 29 last year, and 227 people were confirmed to have died in the flooding.
