The fire started in connection to a residence for one person and one assumes based on that the fire started there and that someone has handled fire carelessly, says Jari Kiemunki, on-duty preliminary investigation leader at the police, to Sveriges Radio.
The suspect was taken to hospital and had not been able to be questioned by Sunday afternoon, according to the police.
Rapid Spread
The clock was 3:30 when the rescue service was alerted about a heavily burning apartment in the Hedensbyn district in Skellefteå. The fire is then said to have developed into a roof fire with rapid spread.
The rescue service sent several fire trucks to the site, but the building could not be saved.
We are working from different sectors and flanks to be able to prevent the spread of the fire. It is still a total fire, said Sebastian Fjaestad, incident commander, to TT at 7 am on Sunday.
Colleague Daniel Haarala says to VK that smoke divers rescued a total of around 40 people from the house, most of whom were sleeping.
People were bewildered. When they opened their eyes, they saw a smoke diver with a large fire behind him. It must have been a shock to wake up like that.
Accommodation for Guest Workers
Not long after the building was evacuated, it was decided to let the heavily burning house, consisting of stacked apartment barracks, burn down.
According to Expressen, it is a hotel apartment, with, among other things, guest workers who work at the battery giant Northvolt. Daniel Haarala also says to VK that the modular house functioned as temporary accommodation for people working in the area.
The evacuated people were taken by bus to another barrack accommodation.
