Riazat and Delgado Varas Exit Left Party to Become Independents

Threatened with expulsion Daniel Riazat and Lorena Delgado Varas leave The Left Party – but not the parliament. There will be an alternative, says Riazat about what happens next. The Left Party dismisses the duo's description of what has led to the defections.

At a hastily convened press conference on Sunday, they direct very harsh criticism at the party and leader Nooshi Dadgostar.

It has become harder, colder and more systematic. Organizationally, it has become a Stalinist organization, but politically it is a Social Democratic party, says Delgado Varas.

The Left Party chooses to "split" the movement, she claims.

One can wonder why. But we can no longer remain silent.

Daniel Riazat says that the decision to leave the Left Party "hurts" but that he no longer sees a way forward. The two also claim that the Left Party's board sacrifices its policy to act as a "doormat" for the Social Democrats.

We cannot continue to be members, says Riazat and adds that he is "deeply sad" to have to leave the party.

But he hints that something new is on the way:

We will continue to organize ourselves. There will be a political alternative, but we do not know in what form.

Domination techniques

Riazat accuses the Left Party of wanting to commit "character murder" on him and Delgado Varas. He says that they have been subjected to domination techniques due to gender and foreign background.

TT: Have you been subjected to racism in the party?

It is part of it, but it is not just that.

The Left Party has opened expulsion cases against Daniel Riazat and Lorena Delgado Varas. The two stated in separate posts on Facebook on Wednesday that they had been urged by the party to leave all their assignments within a day.

The turns around Delgado Varas began in the spring when she shared a post on social media where it was claimed, among other things, that "Zionist Jews" control the world through control over politics and banks.

Poor judgment

The party leadership believed that Delgado Varas had shown poor judgment on repeated occasions and that she therefore could not represent the Left Party in the Riksdag. In May, she was urged to leave her assignments.

This was criticized by Daniel Riazat, who was then a member of the party board. He called the decision "one of the biggest scandals in the party's history".

The Left Party's party secretary Maria Forsberg dismisses Riazat's and Delgado Varas' claims in a written comment to TT.

"What they state as the reason simply does not apply at all. This issue is, just as we said before, about inappropriate behavior over time, mainly in recent months. I feel a great understanding and strong support in the party for having acted against this."
