The bodyguards' jogging routes revealed where Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (The Moderate Party) was, which may have threatened his safety. That information should not exist, says IT security expert David Jacoby.

Dagens Nyheter has reviewed seven bodyguards within the security police, Säpo, with the task of protecting the Prime Minister. Their training activities have been open on the internet since they were registered on the training app.

With the help of the information from the running rounds, Dagens Nyheter has been able to map out where Ulf Kristersson, but also other protected persons in the government, have been.

That you can sit at home in your room and find out where they are by them publishing this information on Strava is of course a bit problematic. Then you have to hope that there are other security measures that make Ulf Kristersson protected, says David Jacoby, IT security expert at the company Syndis.

"Taking action"

After DN contacted Säpo, the bodyguards have closed or locked their accounts from view. Now the routines will be reviewed.

We are now taking action to ensure that the routines are followed. Otherwise, I cannot go into our internal work more than that we are taking action to prevent it from happening again, says Carolina Björnsdotter Paasikivi, head of the security department at the Security Police, to DN.

Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer tells DN that he takes the revelation "very seriously".

As the Security Police have found, this is information that could be used to map the agency's activities, and they are now taking swift action to prevent it from happening again, he says.

The Ministry of Justice is in close contact with the Security Police and is following the work closely.

Naive attitude

David Jacoby thinks it's serious that information about where Kristersson has been could have ended up in the hands of foreign powers, but emphasizes that they also have other channels where they can collect similar information.

But it's a general problem that our lives are so exposed and available on the internet.

Jacoby believes that we have a naive attitude towards how we use apps that collect information about us. It's a relatively new invention and we haven't learned to live with it.

There are too many problems that arise because we don't know how to live together with IT. And this is, as said, a perfect example when you have sensitive people who expose their data on the internet.
