The National Food Agency launched a national control effort at the beginning of 2022, which coincided with Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
This shows deficiencies in 119 facilities in 45 municipalities or control areas throughout the country. In total, the National Food Agency controlled 419 drinking water facilities out of 150 municipalities or control authorities during 2023 and 2024.
This is about deficiencies in the form of, for example, missing safety routines for how and when to introduce boiling recommendations or total discouragement from drinking the water.
Some waterworks could also lack an action plan for what should happen if someone breaks in. During an inspection, harmful substances and chemicals that risk contaminating the water were also discovered.
No national statistics exist on crimes against water facilities in Sweden. But in Region Väst, according to DN, 40 crimes were reported between May and November last year. However, no harmful substances have been found in the water in connection with the intrusions.
