The District Court in Linköping writes in the verdict that "it is a crime committed with deliberate planning, an assault on a physically inferior woman in her own home and a deliberate intention to kill the woman and prevent the fetus she was carrying from developing into a living individual".
The prosecutor in the case, Gabriella Ergül, had requested that the man be sentenced to life imprisonment.
The outcome is what I wanted. I have briefly read the verdict and note that the court has ruled in accordance with my requests, says Gabriella Ergül.
The woman was found dead in her apartment in Linköping on March 21, after family and friends had tried to contact her by phone. The woman, who was 12 weeks pregnant, had extensive injuries to her body and the police immediately suspected murder.
By chance, the now convicted man was stopped for a police check in Stockholm barely a day later. The police thought he was behaving suspiciously and wanted to take him in for questioning.
At the same time, the police in Stockholm received information that the man, who had had a relationship with the woman, was now suspected of the murder in Linköping and he was arrested.
When the police searched his car, they found, among other things, bloody towels and a bloody baton in the trunk.
According to the verdict, the man killed the woman at some point between March 20 and 21, by strangulation and extensive violence against her body and head. He then cleaned up the crime scene and removed traces from the apartment.
The man is also sentenced to pay damages to the murdered woman's relatives.
