The European Judges' Association (EAJ) is urging the Swedish government to introduce a new way of determining judges' salaries as soon as possible. The current system is considered to risk the independence of the profession, according to a press release.
The criticism comes in the form of a resolution that was unanimously adopted at a meeting in Cape Town, South Africa. In Sweden, individual salary setting is used, which the Swedish Judges' Association both opposes and describes as unique.
Among other things, the EAJ refers to a document that prohibits links between salary and judicial activity among judges.
"Such a link threatens internal independence and creates an opportunity to put pressure on the judge in a way that risks influencing their decision-making", writes the Swedish Judges' Association in the same press release.
