The 36-year-old was not the one who started the fastest. But she maintained a high tempo over the 10 km classic in Beitostølen – and was ultimately superior.
Therese Johaug was 39.6 seconds ahead of Heidi Weng and 56.2 seconds faster than Kristin Austgulen Fosnæs.
I'm satisfied with today's race. I managed to take it easy but still have power, she says to NRK.
There were two stiff legs at the top of the last hill, but it was very, very fun to ski again.
Johaug is back after a two-year absence. The veteran has made a comeback with her sights set on the home World Championship in Trondheim, which takes place from February 26 to March 9.
Before her comeback, the star said she had to "apply the brakes with an emergency brake", as the high expectations and life as a mother became too much.
The training volume became somewhat smaller – which in Beitostølen proved to be the right decision.
I feel that I've become stronger in my upper body, in my whole body, and that I can create power, she says.
The World Cup season begins in Finnish Ruka, November 29–December 1.
