Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar claims that the country will boycott the UN Human Rights Council and accuses it of anti-Semitism.

"This body has focused on attacking a democratic country and spreading anti-Semitism, instead of promoting human rights", he claims on X.

Pascal Sim, spokesperson for the council, responds to the announcement that Israel has the status of observer state and is not one of the 47 member countries. As such, the country cannot "withdraw from the council", he adds.

The announcement comes after the US withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council. Both the US and Israel have long expressed suspicion that the Human Rights Council HRC would be biased or hostile towards Israel.

The council is based in Geneva. It is an intergovernmental body within the UN system responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights globally, as well as highlighting violations of human rights.
