A foreign power tried to deceive a human rights lawyer into leaving Australia and traveling to a location where they planned to kill or harm the lawyer.
This is claimed by Mike Burgess, general secretary of the intelligence agency Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, Asio, which leads the country's espionage activities. The plans were stopped.
In a small number of cases, we have had serious concerns for the threatened person's life, said Burgess in a speech at Asio's headquarters in the capital Canberra.
Another country planned to kill or harm several people in an attempt to silence critics around the world, according to Burgess, who did not provide information about the third country's plans.
Asio also discovered that a country was targeting critical infrastructure targets in the USA. According to Burgess, they have also alerted American authorities to the fact that a 12-year-old neo-Nazi planned to carry out a mass shooting at a school in the country.
