Patches that are supposed to keep mosquitoes away are being sold in Sweden - despite being illegal and hazardous to health. The effect of mosquito patches is also being questioned by experts.

According to the Chemicals Agency, mosquito patches are classified as "biocidal products within product type 19" and currently, there are no approved mosquito patches in Sweden, reports Sveriges Radio P3 News.

Just mosquito patches are not approved in Sweden. We know that they can contain substances that cause skin irritation if used directly on the skin, says Jenny Karlsson, inspector at the Chemicals Agency, to P3 News.

The mosquito patches also have no proven effect and are being dismissed by mosquito expert Anders Lindström.

You might as well throw your money away, he says.

Last year, the Chemicals Agency reported several companies selling mosquito patches. Despite this, they are still being sold, mainly on social media with the help of a long list of well-known Swedish influencers.

It's difficult to control sales there, says Jenny Karlsson.
