The EU's voluntary code of conduct against hate speech is now a formal part of the Digital Services Act, DSA. Above all, it's about striving to review at least two-thirds of the reported hate material within 24 hours.
"In Europe, there is no place for illegal hate, neither offline nor online", writes EU Commissioner for Digital Security, Henna Virkkunen, in a press release on Monday.
In practice, however, the formal introduction does not make a big difference. It is still voluntary for the large online giants to sign and follow the code of conduct.
Later this spring, the Commission also hopes to formally incorporate similar voluntary codes of conduct for disinformation into the DSA.
