The men, 24 and 18 years old, were arrested in connection with a raid in November in Banda Aceh on the island of Sumatra. A citizen's guard broke into a room that the couple had rented and called the police.
Now, one of them is sentenced to 85 lashes and the other to 80.
The ultra-conservative province of Aceh is governed, unlike the rest of Indonesia, by Islamic Sharia laws. Since the Indonesian government allowed the introduction of Sharia laws in Aceh in 2006, more than 100 people have been subjected to public flogging every year.
According to the law, people accused of homosexuality, extramarital sex, alcohol consumption, and gambling can be sentenced to up to 100 lashes – but also women who wear tight clothing and men who skip Friday prayers.
Human rights groups have repeatedly directed sharp criticism against Aceh's legislation.
