This is what Erik Jensen, Greenland's Finance Minister and Chairman of Siumut (social democratic party in Greenland), says to the Greenlandic media KNR.
However, compensation is only given to women who underwent the procedure after Greenland took over responsibility for healthcare from Denmark in 1991. Those who had a spiral inserted before have not yet received any compensation.
At least 4,500 Greenlandic women and girls were given spirals between 1960 and 1991, as part of a Danish "spiral campaign" to reduce birth rates on the island. Many did not give their consent to the procedure. Over 140 of them have sued Denmark for human rights violations and are demanding compensation totaling approximately 43 million Danish kronor.
The Danish government and the Greenlandic government Naalakkersuisut launched an investigation into the events in 2023. It is expected to be completed in 2025.
