Green light for boxing federation - can save Olympic status

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) gives a preliminary green light to the new federation World Boxing – a decision that can save the sport's Olympic Games status. The IOC has previously cut all ties with the scandal-ridden IBA (International Boxing Federation), which has links to Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

Summer 2022, the IOC made the decision that Iba would not be allowed to arrange the OS qualification and OS competitions in Paris 2024 due to how the federation is governed, including financing and judge scandals.

Iba chairman Umar Kremlev has strong ties to the Kremlin and Russia's President Vladimir Putin. When Putin nationalized a company that is the country's largest car retailer in the fall of 2024, the Russian Kremlev was appointed CEO, which Dagens Nyheter has previously reported on.

World Boxing was formed in 2023 and now has 78 member countries, including Sweden. This means that the IOC's requirement of at least 75 members from at least four continents is fulfilled, writes DN.

The IOC's preliminary approval of the new federation is seen by World Boxing as a "milestone", writes the news agency AFP.

"Retaining a place in the Olympic Games is completely crucial for the future of our sport at all levels", says the federation's chairman Boris van der Vorst, the Netherlands, in a statement.
