Green instead of pork is not discrimination

In several municipalities, students who do not eat pork have to settle for vegetarian options on days when pork is on the menu. The Discrimination Ombudsman (DO) has received around 20 complaints – but is now dismissing the supervision.

"Provided that the vegetarian diet offered by the municipality meets the requirements of being nutritious and free of charge, this cannot be considered discrimination in the sense of the Discrimination Act", says Karin Ahlstrand Oxhamre, head of the DO's Legal Unit, in a press release.

In, among other places, Uddevalla and Varberg municipalities, no other meat alternatives are offered as special diets when pork is served in school.

That students who, for religious reasons, do not eat pork then have to settle for vegetarian food has been perceived as discriminatory by some, and around 20 people have reported the matter to the DO.

However, it is assessed that the changes in the municipalities' food policies are not equivalent to discrimination. The cases that have been received by the DO will be closed shortly.
