Gothenburg Art Hall at Risk of Standing Empty

In March 2025, Göteborgs Konsthall will move its operations to the Slakthus area in Gamlestaden. But what will happen to the venerable and specially built premises at Götaplatsen is still unclear.

Despite the move being known for years, there is still no new tenant. According to information to Göteborgs-Posten, talks are being held with Hasselblad Center.

It was in September 2022 – after eleven years of investigations – that Göteborg's cultural committee decided that the art hall would move. The decision has been criticized, among others by gallery owner Pontus Hammarén, who has initiated the petition "Save Göteborg's art hall at Götaplatsen".

Hammarén believes that instead of spending money on rebuilding premises in the Slakthus area, one should complement the existing art hall with an extension at the back.

The art hall will undoubtedly end up on the periphery. The premises at Götaplatsen just turned one hundred years old, are incredibly fine and actually tailor-made for art, he says to GP.
