"Chess" is one of Björn & Benny's most famous works, but the musical is considered a flop on Broadway, where it premiered in 1988, but was shut down after just two months.
But after nearly 40 years, the chess musical gets a new chance in New York's theater district. This fall, it will have a new premiere, reports Variety.
A well-known name will take on the lead role. Lea Michele is best known for playing the lead role in the TV series "Glee" between 2009 and 2015. Since then, she has made a career on Broadway, including in the musical "Funny Girl" in 2022.
Musical artists Aaron Tveit and Nicholas Christopher will play the other lead roles. In the original production, the lead roles were sung by Elaine Paige, Murray Head, and Tommy Körberg.
Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus' music remains in the production, but a new libretto has been written by Danny Strong. Tim Rice wrote the libretto for the original production in 1986.
"Chess" started as a concept album and contains some of Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus' most famous songs, such as "One Night in Bangkok", "Anthem", and "I Know Him So Well".
