The alarm came at 11:22. Large parts of the building have been filled with smoke and residents have been evacuated from balconies with the help of ladder trucks.

What has happened is that a fire has broken out in the basement, which has then spread to two stairwells. We have extinguished most of the fire now, says Mikael Lundqvist, duty officer at the rescue service.

However, the fire has not yet spread to apartments.

According to the police, about ten people have required medical attention, of which eight have been taken to hospital by ambulance for control. Two people were initially assessed as seriously injured.

The police have launched a preliminary investigation into aggravated arson. The site will remain cordoned off pending investigation by search dogs and forensic technicians.

According to the rescue service, there are several fire sources in the building. It has therefore started burning in several places at the same time. The likelihood of it being intentional increases with the number of places where it has burned, says the police's press spokesperson Mats Eriksson.

No one has been arrested.

The municipality has opened Ronnaskolan where the evacuees can receive help.

The municipality's crisis support group is activated. This means that social services are on site and offer such things as clothing and conversation support, says Åsa Zazi, the municipality's press officer.
