In court rulings between 2016 and 2020, convicted fathers who are also involved in a custody dispute – and after serving their sentence – in 19 out of 32 cases have been granted sole or joint custody, or the right to unsupervised contact with their children. This is against the mother's will.
Lawyer Camilla Orefjärd, who specializes in children's rights issues, says in the program that she is not surprised.
We have seen the shortcomings, we have raised this issue, but we do not feel that it has been heeded, our concern.
The reasons given by the court for granting the fathers custody can be that the crime was committed a long time ago, or that the mother does not cooperate sufficiently.
