Between the 19th and 23rd of May, the forecasts show particularly high levels over Finland – so high that even people without known allergies got symptoms. In Uleåborg, they had daily average values of 800 pollen grains per cubic meter on May 22nd.
Laurence Rouil, head of the satellite monitoring service Cams, says in a comment that periods with extremely high pollen levels are not uncommon during the spring.
"But the severity and extent of this year's episode show how important it is with continuous monitoring. Exact forecasts make it possible for us to better understand seasonal patterns and environmental drivers and provide important information to minimize the health effects, especially for vulnerable population groups."
