Exposed to online hate: "More of a rule than an exception"

The Norwegian biathlon star Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold was heavily harassed in social media after the flop in the World Championship. Hate speech is unfortunately something that even the Swedish stars have had to get used to. It has happened several times after a poor competition, says Elvira Öberg.

It was after the mixed relay, where Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold shot away Norway's medal chance, that she was heavily attacked on social media. The Norwegian herself posted the message in an Instagram post.

The Swedish biathletes can also testify to being subjected to online hate.

It has happened several times that I receive that type of message after a bad competition. It's very sad, but that's the way it is, says Elvira Öberg.

If you have a really bad competition, it tends to come, it's more of a rule than an exception, unfortunately.

She says that when the posts are really rough, like the one Tandrevold was subjected to, they are easier to shake off.

When it's just hate and attacks and no constructive criticism. You know that this person probably doesn't feel well either. Then it's easier to ignore, but it can still be nice to talk about it briefly with someone else to downplay it. Then it becomes easier to disregard it, block it, and move on.

She says she has never been afraid.

Her sister Hanna Öberg has also been subjected to online hate.

It happens now and then, but I wouldn't say it's part of daily life. And I don't think it should be part of biathlon either, says Hanna Öberg.

I generally think that the biathlon audience isn't like that, you cheer on everyone and have respect and are humble towards the fact that biathlon is a tough sport.
