EU and USA Approach Final Tariff Negotiations

A final negotiation on the customs issue with the USA may take place next week, according to a spokesperson for the EU Commission. But in that case, a green light is required from the member countries after this week's customs meetings in Washington DC.

The EU's Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič will this afternoon report to the Swedish government and other EU governments on the results of this week's meetings with representatives of the Trump administration in the USA.

Nothing ready to take a stand on

What this will result in is currently difficult to say, according to Olof Gill, spokesperson for the EU Commission on trade issues. But it could be about giving the green light for the EU Commission to start final negotiations next week on an agreement on the customs issue between the EU and the USA.

No final agreement to take a stand on - to avoid a full-blown trade war when President Donald Trump's customs pause expires on July 9 - is in place after this week's meetings. But there could be a fairly clear picture of what the Trump administration can be expected to agree to.

If the member states are willing to agree to that direction, we can aim to complete an agreement next week, says Gill.

The EU Commission has a mandate to negotiate on behalf of the member countries in trade matters.

A long list of US tariffs on the EU

On the social network X, Šefčovič writes that the week in Washington DC has been productive, with meetings with the US Finance Minister Scott Bessent, the US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and the US Trade Minister Howard Lutnick.

"Our goal remains unchanged: a good and ambitious transatlantic trade agreement", he writes.

The USA has, since Donald Trump took office as president, introduced a long list of new tariffs on EU countries - including general tariffs of 10 percent on all EU goods, as well as 25 percent tariffs on cars and car parts and 50 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Trump has threatened to raise the general tariffs if an agreement cannot be reached.

The EU has so far chosen to refrain from countermeasures, but has prepared countermeasures in the form of tariffs on a long list of goods from the USA.
