It was during Saturday that the Canadian union Cupe initiated the weekend's 72-hour strike for cabin crew at Air Canada. Hours later, the Canadian government forced the employees to return to work as the cancelled flights were feared to have too great an impact on Canada's entire economy. The airline flies over 100,000 passengers daily and is central to the country's infrastructure.

Minister of Employment Patty Hajdu states, however, that it may take five to ten days before the regular air traffic is up and running again as the decision needs to be tried in court. Air Canada states that the flights will be cancelled at least during Sunday. This affects, among other things, Sunday's flight from Stockholm to Toronto.

The conflict between the airline and the union concerns, among other things, that the union wants to see compensation for ground services that cabin crew normally do not get paid for, including when passengers board the plane.
