Engelkes sets up Wagner

The Wagner enthusiast Charlotte Engelkes is to direct Richard Wagner's breakthrough work "Lohengrin" at Malmö Opera. The fantasy-based epic is built on the legend of the Swan Knight, which is a common motif in medieval poetry.

"I think that fairy tales carry a power to teach. The story of Svanriddaren that Elsa saw in her dream, and which later comes to rescue her, is not just fantasy, but a story filled with existential questions about how we ourselves create our lives. To believe and doubt at the same time is both healthy and scenic entertainment", says Charlotte Engelkes in a press release.

The Scanian tenor Joachim Bäckström sings the title role. The opera has its premiere on October 26 on Malmö Opera's main stage.
