In Japan, he is accused of having participated in an intrusion on a whaling ship in Antarctica in February 2010. Japanese authorities claim that he damaged the ship and prevented the crew from performing their work. A crew member is said to have been injured. Another activist was arrested after the incident in Tokyo and sentenced to two years in prison.

Watson, who is an American and Canadian citizen, has denied the allegations.

In 2012, Japan issued an international arrest warrant through Interpol, and in July this year, Watson was arrested on Greenland. French President Emmanuel Macron has urged Denmark not to extradite him to Japan.

Now he is free to return to France, where he resides and has his family.
