Cyclists are heavily overrepresented among serious traffic accidents. Therefore, the state's efforts for cycling traffic will now be reviewed, according to the National Audit Office.
According to the review, there are signs that the state's ambitions are not being translated into sufficient measures. The cycling infrastructure lacks the logic that the rest of the road network has.
Half of all accidents involving cyclists are estimated to be caused by the design and maintenance of roads, despite cycling, according to the National Audit Office, being a mode of transport that the Riksdag wants to promote.
"The risk of being killed or seriously injured in an accident is many times greater for cyclists than for car drivers, and nearly half of the accidents are due to flaws in the traffic environment. This is a matter that must be taken very seriously," says National Auditor Helena Lindberg in a press release.
The review is expected to be published in a report in April next year.
