The leading Asian stock exchanges started Monday trading on a gloomy note.
In Tokyo, the important Nikkei 225 index had decreased by 0.8 percent at lunchtime, while the broader Topix index fell by 0.4.
The same gloomy mood prevailed in Hong Kong, where the Hang Seng index lost 0.5.
Nor did the composite indexes in Shanghai and Shenzhen report any cheerful tones, as they fell by 0.1 and 0.4, respectively.
