Russia has committed numerous human rights violations on Crimea since the illegal Russian annexation of the peninsula in 2014, the European Court rules.
Russia has breached the European Convention's provisions regarding the right to life and religious freedom, the right to freedom of expression, and the prohibition of inhuman and degrading treatment, the court in Strasbourg (ECHR) states in its judgment.
Ukraine has been behind bringing the case to court. Russia was, however, expelled from the Council of Europe after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which means the country is no longer bound to follow the European Convention. The court can, however, still deal with cases that occurred before Russia was expelled.
