The classic French club Bordeaux is being forcibly relegated to the third division. This is due to the club's precarious economic situation.
Bordeaux has won Ligue 1 on six occasions, and played as recently as 2010 in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
Now the giant club is being forcibly relegated to the French third division, after failing to meet the economic requirements of the French second division, where the club has been residing since the 2022/23 season. Currently, the club has no owner and is on the verge of bankruptcy.
The decision was made a few weeks ago, but the club chose to appeal the decision.
It seemed for a while that it could be resolved. Fenway Sports Group, which also owns Liverpool, was in advanced negotiations to take over Bordeaux, but after the negotiations collapsed, the club chose on Tuesday to withdraw the appeal and accept the forced relegation.
"The period that begins now must make it possible for FC Girondins de Bordeaux to come back stronger and to the highest level," the club writes in a statement on social media.
The Swedish goalkeeper Karl-Johan Johnsson plays for the club.
