Few celebrities and large TikTok accounts have been hacked, according to Forbes. Those affected include Paris Hilton, the news network CNN, and one of Sony Music's accounts.
The extent of the impact is unclear, but according to TikTok spokespeople, it is "very few" and the company is cooperating with them to restore content on their accounts where necessary.
The attack occurred through the spread of malicious code via private messages. For CNN, it is the second time in a short period that their TikTok account has been taken over by hackers.
The attack comes after President Joe Biden signed a law that could lead to TikTok being banned in the US. To avoid this, the Chinese owner, ByteDance, must sell its stake within a year, which the company denies. The concern is that data will be collected and used by the Chinese state for propaganda purposes.
