Celebrated in front of opponent – got ejected

Brendan Shinnimin reduced for Luleå. Then he celebrated in front of Växjö's Petter Granberg – and was ejected. If that's what you get ejected for these days, then hockey in Sweden is going in the wrong direction, he says.

The strange sequence of events took place at the end of the first period. Växjö led the SHL meeting with 2–0 when Shinnimin reduced the lead with 14 seconds left. After the goal, he stood up and cheered in front of Granberg. Something that resulted in a two-minute penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

I have no idea why I was penalized. I scored a goal and celebrated. It's a game and we like to have fun. I celebrated and I think it's sad that I get a penalty for it, he says to TV4 after the first period.

He is critical of the referee's decision.

If that's what you get penalized for nowadays, then hockey in Sweden is going in the wrong direction, he says.

The Luleå player says he didn't get any explanation from the referee.

It must be because they don't like me. I've played professional ice hockey for 13 years and it's pathetic how little respect I get. I tried to talk nicely to the referees, but they didn't want to talk to me. It's a shame, says Shinnimin.

The Canadian's goal was of little help. Växjö won the match with 5–2 in front of their home crowd.
