Rolf-Göran Bengtsson has an Olympic Games silver and a European Championship gold on his merit list, and has participated in seven Olympic Games during his career. In recent years, he and the horse Zuccero HV have become a familiar sight on the competition tracks – but it is an era that may now be coming to an end.
The horse's owner, Holsteiner Verband, wants to sell and Bengtsson has not been able to find a solution that would allow Zuccero to stay in the stable.
I still hope to be able to secure him for myself, but so far I have nothing that holds, says Bengtsson.
If the horse is sold, the 62-year-old show jumper will see the end of his career.
The current status is that something needs to happen quickly, as he will soon be put on the market. If he is sold, it's the end of my career, I won't have time to take up a new horse before I'm too old, so it's with him that I could continue for a few more years.
The pair are currently in Abu Dhabi, where the League of Nations team competition is taking place over the weekend. There, Bengtsson and Zuccero won a prestigious grand prix show jumping event on Thursday.
It's even more fun to win now when it might have been our last GP, to show that it's the two of us together who do it, says Bengtsson.
