Black Week did not boost clothing sales

The last week of November did not give the same boost to clothing retail as it usually does. The Swedes held on to their wallets and e-commerce declined compared to last year.

The Swedes did not join the shopping spree to the same extent as usual during Black Week. This is shown by figures from Svensk Handel's style index for November.

Total clothing sales increased by only 1.6 percent compared to the same month last year, while shoe sales show a negative trend of -6.9 percent.

Physical trade fared slightly better than e-commerce, with a 3.8 percent increase in clothing sales.

"The modest figures show that many households are still holding tight to their wallets, which puts great pressure on fashion companies. Statistics from SCB show that households' weak consumption over a long period has held back GDP growth," says Sofia Larsen, CEO of Svensk Handel, in a press release.
