Every year, 8.5 billion is stolen in the retail sector, a 20 per cent increase since 2021, according to a report from the Swedish Trade Federation.
The report shows that the increased crime rate is causing 10 per cent of retailers to consider closing down their businesses.
Retailers are demanding more measures to reduce theft and other types of crime. Specifically, they are calling for a higher police presence, which over 90 per cent of retailers believe would lead to a decrease in shoplifting.
"The results presented in this report highlight the threat that theft and other forms of crime pose to Sweden as a retail nation," says Sofia Larsen, CEO of the Swedish Trade Federation, in a press release.
