Trump has on his way back to the White House used an old Republican slogan, "Drill, baby, drill", to illustrate how it will be with him as president again.
The president-elect's plans for American oil and gas extraction may, however, be on their way to meet resistance. According to the news agency Bloomberg, Biden will on Monday announce a ban on such new projects. The ban covers an area of a total of 625 million acres in the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Gulf of Mexico, the latter being a location for a large part of the American oil industry.
The ban is intended to protect the areas from an environmental and climate perspective, including against the risks of oil spills. On the other hand, Biden will continue to keep the door open for new investments in the central and western parts of the Gulf of Mexico, areas that account for 14 percent of the country's total oil production.
Already established oil and gas extractions in other regions will not be affected by the decision. The news agency Bloomberg writes that Trump may indeed try to revoke the ban, but Biden's decision has its basis in a 72-year-old federal law.
