Austria's new government wants to change the asylum law to pause family reunions for asylum seekers from May onwards, when new applications will not be processed.
Exceptions will be made, writes the newspaper Die Presse.
The country is the first in the EU to take this measure, but several countries are considering tightening the possibility for family members to follow persons who cannot safely return to their home countries.
Austria has already paused family reunions for Syrians, since the Islamist HTS movement overthrew Bashar al-Assad's regime in December.
