40-year-old Michael Apelgren has been the assistant national team captain alongside Glenn Solberg in recent years, a contract that expired last month.
However, according to Aftonbladet, the Stockholm resident may stay in the national team – now as national team captain. Apelgren is said to be the association's first choice after Solberg surprisingly left the national team captain job with immediate effect.
Apelgren says that the association is discussing with several candidates, but admits that he is interested in becoming national team captain.
I have always had the ambition to become that. So yes, clearly there is interest from my side, even though I didn't hope it would happen in this way (that Solberg resigned), he says to Aftonbladet.
If Apelgren takes over the national team, he will have a double role, since he has a contract with the Hungarian top club Pick Szeged.
Sweden will next face France and Denmark in the EHF European Championship in early November. The squad for those matches will be selected as early as next Tuesday.
